Program: A Jewish History of Cleveland's Irishtown Bend

The creation of a proposed 25-acre Irishtown Bend park on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River offers a unique opportunity to investigate and recover a "lost" neighborhood on Cleveland's Near West Side. While Irish immigrants did predominate for several decades among those who lived on the hillside above Irishtown Bend, they were followed in the early 1900s by Hungarian immigrants, including members of the B'nai Jeshurun Congregation.  In fact, Jewish residents and real estate investors played a small but notable role in nearly every decade of the neighborhood's history, from the 1850s through the 1950s, when the entire hillside was demolished to make way for public housing.

Our Speaker: Dr. Margaret E. Lynch has served as Executive Director of the Irish American Archives Society since 2008.  As Executive Director, she researches, develops, and presents talks, displays, walking tours, and other programming related to the history of the Irish in Cleveland.  As a free- lance writer and arts education consultant, she previously managed arts education projects for a variety of cultural institutions, including Great Lakes Theater, the Mandel Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, and Cuyahoga Community College.  She researched and compiled a book about the history of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cleveland and is currently conducting research about the settlement of the hillside above Irishtown Bend in Cleveland.

Registration: Registration by Tuesday, December 3rd is required.

Board Members: Please email Jane Rothstein if you are unable to attend the Board meeting.
